I think there should be an option to add images to text buttons in the same way a filmstrip can be provided to sliders. I suppose that this can be done using the lookAndFeel (haven’t tried it yet) but most of us already have our favourites png for on/off states and it would be great to be able to quickly slap them on the GUI.

Sure. If you want to take it another step forward, add also an option to get a clipped region, since designers will often pack both states into one png file.
Well, in that case it could already work using a Filmstrip slider with one step
